The Rocky Mountain Division of NARCOA invites you to participate in a 3 day motorcar excursion on the D&SNGRR on August 13th-16th, 2009. EC Philip Walters will be coordinating this excursion along with EC Jon Keeling. Set on is Thursday afternoon August 13th in Silverton. August 14th, 15th & 16th participants will travel approximately 56 round-trip miles per day against the current of traffic on this historic railroad during "Railfest 2009", between Silverton and Rockwood for a total of about 168 miles. We will be meeting the historic steam power of the D&SNGRR as well as other visiting historic equipment as we travel the Animas Canyon and the spectacular “High-Line”.

[This run will immediately follow a run on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad to be held August 10-12; information on that ride is posted at www.narcoa.org and Jim McKeel is the excursion Coordinator for that run which is hosted by Heart of the Heartlands]

Experienced, alert operators and excellent motorcar mechanical condition please. Spark arresters and wheel chocks required. There will be no mentoring on this event. This is a NARCOA insured excursion, and all NARCOA rules will apply. This is a NO SMOKING event. You must be over 18 years of age. No pets.

There is a 20 motorcar limit. Cut off date for signing up is Friday, July 10, 2009.

Do not assume that refunds can be made if you decide to cancel, as we must meet certain minimum fees. Refund requests will be considered only after the excursion costs have been paid.

We will have the release and motorcar inspection forms with us at Silverton, fill them out first thing and sign our waiver.

SET-ON TIME at Silverton, CO: Thursday August 13, 2008 2:00 PM. Do not be late.  We will have a mandatory D&SNGRR rules orientation class and then set on after the train leaves town. We will meet on Mineral Street between 11th and 13th near the in town tracks. As you come into town on Green Street, turn right at 11th, go two blocks and turn left on Mineral. All runs will be between Silverton and Rockwood with an early am departure Friday, the 14th to be expected.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:

• Experienced and alert operators and excellent motorcar mechanical condition please. NO MENTORING ON THIS RUN.
• NARCOA membership, operator certification card, insurance card in your possession
• NARCOA Rulebook 6.3 in your possession. All operators are required to have a working knowledge of the current NARCOA rule book
• NARCOA compliant motorcar including (but not limited to), fire extinguisher, lever actuated brake lights, headlights, lift handles, tow bar, safety chain, etc.
• USFS Approved spark arrestor
• Front rail sweeps
• All motorcar wheels will be inspected and gauge checked, outside face of wheels for 36" gauge, 42 7/16" + 0" - 1/8"
• Motorcars should be of the nostalgic traditional type that are appropriate for what the narrow gauge railroads are trying to achieve by having our group as guests on their properties. This means NO steam cars, rail rods, track scoots, skateboards, modified ATV's or something home made that wouldn't have been used in actual railroad service.
• All motorcars equipped with a turntable must have, (see rule 1 - 19),
(1) Hydraulic turntable - a positive locking device and audible warning device.
(2) Electrically operated turntable with positive gear engagement - an audible warning device.
• As the owner/operator of a motorcar, you have the ultimate responsibility for its safety and maintenance. Please pre-inspect your motorcar before you leave home.

PERSONNEL RULES
• Absolutely NO SMOKING in motorcars or on Railroad property.
• You must be over 18 years of age to attend this excursion.
• Long pants, and work type footwear (No tennis shoes, sandals, etc.) while on railroad property and also when loading & unloading or around your motorcar.
• No pets.
• Please refresh yourself and inform your passengers of all NARCOA personnel rules.
• We will be in very remote territory at times; are you capable of walking out if there is a problem and we are not able to ride our motorcars out?

OPERATIONAL REQUIRMENTS
• Be prepared to tow or be towed if there is a break down, make sure your hitches and tow bars are compatible, may I suggest 1" holes in your hitch and tow bars and 3/4" or 7/8" pins with keepers.
• THERE WILL BE NO INDEPENDENT OPERATION. This means if we are moving as a group, you must keep up. Do not stop unless the car ahead of you is stopping, or you have a breakdown. You cannot stop to take pictures. Taking pictures is a passenger job.
• Radio communications: NARCOA CH1 151.625
• You may monitor the railroad’s frequency D&S 160.860
• All operators are required to have and understand a working knowledge of the current NARCOA rule book. Note: It isn't the meet coordinators job to train operators on rulebook items when they go on an excursion.
• ALWAYS EXPECT A TRAIN ON ANY TRACK AT ANY TIME IN ANY DIRECTION.
. Be considerate, stay alert and be prepared: For many reasons, some of which are courtesy and others being safety and time restraints, please, operators and passengers, stay with your motorcars and be considerate, stay alert and be prepared. At times we will operate at a very relaxed pace but when we need to get out of the way and in the clear you must be a team player and keep up with the group at the pace being set by the railroad pilot.

Lodging: All lodging and meals are on your own.
You will be traveling to Silverton Thursday August 13th for an afternoon set-on. You will need to be in Silverton no later than 2:00 PM. You will need lodging at Silverton, CO the 13th, 14th and 15th .

RMD Excursion Reservation Refund Policy

On Cancellation, RMD will issue a full refund of excursion fees paid, provided there will be no adverse financial effect on the excursion and or RMD.
