Black Hills Central Railroad

                                          June 25, 2005 (Saturday)

                                          San Luis Central Railroad

Motorcar Excursion on the San Luis Central R.R. Co. This Rocky Mountain Division-sponsored excursion for RMD members will take place on the morning of June 25th, 2005, with our round-trip beginning at the southern terminus of the railroad at Sugar Junction at the SLC Station, one mile east of Monte Vista, Colorado, just north of the wye interchange with the SLRG, continuing north to Center, Colorado and return.Set-on is planned for 9:00am, Inspection at 10:00am and subsequent Departure at 11:00am, with a return to Sugar Junction and set-off at 4:30pm. The San Luis Central Excursion Fee will be $15 per person. A few stops are planned, including 2 hours for lunch at Center, Colorado. The SLC RR is an industrial and agricultural railroad which operates trackage from Sugar Junction to Center, Colorado, 13+ miles directly north. Monte Vista, Colorado and Sugar Junction can be reached from Denver on U.S. 285 South, from Colorado Springs on U.S. 24 West to U.S. 285 South, and from I-25 and Walsenburg, Colorado, West on U.S. 160. A map is attached. The SLC RR is located in the largest alpine valley in the world, in which the floor lies 7,500 feet above sea level. The length of the valley from north to south is over 80 miles, and its greatest width is approximately 50 miles. Nestled high in the Colorado Rockies, protected by 14,000 foot peaks, the San Luis Valley offers breathtaking scenery year round. The San Juan Range on the west is the continental divide. The spiny Sangre de Cristo Range on the east is one of Colorado's tallest mountain ranges. Mt. Blanca, the fourth tallest peak in Colorado, at 14,345 feet, towers over the San Luis Valley. Also, advised is protection against Colorado s strong UV Radiation at this altitude, West Nile Virus and High-altitude dehydration. Our stop in Center at 12:30pm will allow plenty enough time to: A. Enjoy the lunch you brought in your cooler. B. Enjoy the catered picnic lunch, cost is an additional $15 per person in advance. C. Walk to the town s restaurants. Much more adventure-some and riskier, since the Mexican-style Fare here seems to be hotter here. (Ask me how I know.) To recap costs and fees, which must be paid in advance:Excursion fee: $15.00 (Per Person) Membership Fee $15.00 (for Non-members) Lunch $15.00 (optional, and really is excellent, hot or not) Please send your fees and lunch dollars to: Steve Patterson or Gus Mocilac.  EXCURSION COMPLETED
