Rocky Mountain Division ( RMD) will be hosting a three-day excursion on the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad out of Leadville Colorado commencing on August 21 and ending on August 23 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), 2009. Friday – Evening run: From Leadville roundhouse to Talus Slope and return. Round trip is approximately 20 miles long. We will cover over 20 miles up and back of some of the highest historical railroad in the “Lower 48”. The line was once a famous narrow gauge Colorado mountain rail line converted to standard gauge in WW II. This run begins in a run from Leadville roundhouse up to the “Talus Slope” and possibly beyond towards Fremont pass and the world famous Climax Molybdenum mine depending on track and weather conditions. ( Yes it can snow at this altitude in August!!) and return. Our plans are to run late Friday afternoon ( weather permitting) with two runs Saturday: early morning and mid day . The activity will conclude with a mid morning run on Sunday before setoff. Total run miles for the four runs will be in excess of 80 miles. Set-on, paperwork, and inspection will take place on Friday August 21, 2009 from approx. 3 pm to 5 pm, and again on Saturday morning from approx. 5:30 am to 6:30 am. NARCOA INSPECTION Form pre filled in will be appreciated. Cost: $85 per car regardless of 1 day or 3 days of runs. Make checks payable to ROCKY MOUNTAIN DIVISION and mail to the listed EC contact address. There is a 25 car maximum for this excursion. Deadline for registration/payment: August 1 , 2009. Saturday. Run day late arrivals will be considered on a case by case basis but payment must be made in FULL in CASH the day of arrival and run. No partial credit will be allowed. The latest version of the NARCOA Rulebook will apply. NARCOA Insurance and Certificate of Examination card required.

Experienced and alert operators with motorcars in good mechanical condition are prefered. If you need to be mentored we must know in advance. Ensure that your motorcar and yourself are ready for high altitude operation (10,000 ft. up to 11,500 + ft. elevation) and that it will be able to pull an extended 11 mile grade with grades which may approach 4% . Spark arresters and wheel chocks required. THE 0 BREAKDOWN RULE WILL APPLY DUE TO TRAIN SCHEDULES. No smoking on railroad property and National forest smoking ban regulations will apply. Be prepared for a variety of mountain weather conditions ranging from sunny and 70 * F to snow and 30* F. Bring lots of drinking water. Wear appropriate clothing, NARCOA rules apply( layering is one good choice ) sturdy boots are recommended for this extreme railroad environment. Ensure that brakes, headlights, tail lights, and brake lights are in good working order.

Lodging and meals are on your own. There is a Safeway grocery store within walking distance of the roundhouse. ( there are no facilities at end of track!!) Web sites for addition information are www.leadvilleusa.com , www.leadville.com  , www.leadville.org  and www.leadville-train.com .

August 21 2009 Friday

The EC Jerry Geiger should arrive at Leadville Roundhouse/yard by 3:30 pm. We will Set On our cars on the track as directed for a run Friday evening.

4:00 pm Car inspections

4:45 pm Safety meeting for the Motorcar operators who want to run Friday evening

5:00 pm Evening run . Depart roundhouse area for talus slope area where the train currently stops? and return to roundhouse yard

7:30 pm Arrive roundhouse area and tie down for the night on track as directed by the railroad.

 

August 22, 2009 Saturday

6:00 am Motor car set on and inspections for those cars not inspected on Friday

6:45 am Motor car operator and passenger safety meeting

7:00 am Depart behind LC&S track inspector for talus slope or as directed by LC&S track inspector. Immediately return to Leadville roundhouse to clear main track for 10 am train departure up the hill.

9:30 am Group is back at the roundhouse and clear of the main track for the 10 am train departure

12:45 pm MC group back at the roundhouse for safety meeting.

1:00 pm MC group departs for area above talus slope or as cleared by the LC&S RR to clear area for 2 pm train arrival in vicinity.

3:30 pm MC group returns to roundhouse AFTER confirmation that 2 pm train is returning to Leadville. This is the part of the weekend runs that will be used for photo stops, history stops etc. Our intention is to give the 2 pm train a very wide margin ahead of us.

5:30 pm MC group arrives at roundhouse ( This time may vary depending on stops and length of same by our group returning to Leadville. Tie down for the night on track designated by the RR

 

August 23 Sunday

8:30 am MC group safety meeting

8:45 am departure for area above talus slope to clear the upper end for the 10 am train. THE DEPARTURE TIME WILL DEPEND ON THE ARRIVAL OF THE LC&S Track inspector back at the roundhouse. Time will be confirmed on Saturday.

11:30 am depart upper area for Leadville roundhouse after we confirm the 10 am train has headed back down to Leadville

1:00 pm arrive Leadville roundhouse and ALL cars set off the railroad END of RUNS. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE CLEAR THE MAIN LINE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AFTER THIS LAST RUN.

Special notes:

1)    NO excursion MCs are to set on the rails until the EC Jerry Geiger has arrived AND the set on has been cleared by the railroad officials or their designate.

2)    If you or your party would want to ride the regular train ( a very nice ride) Saturday morning there should be time to do so upon return from the morning excursion run  on Saturday and prior to the safety meeting and departure for the afternoon MC ride at 12:45pm. Another alternative would the the Sunday 2 PM train IF your car is set off and out of the way. Costs for this ride would be your responsibility.

3)    If you have not paid the required fee please have a check made out to RMD prior to set on. Cost of this run is $85.

4)    Remember you must have a current NARCOA operators license and current NARCOA insurance. These will be verified at set on.

5)    If you have a camping unit the RR has given us kind permission to park in the roundhouse area. There are NO facilities so plan on your own water, toilet, and electricity. If you do park in the area respect the railroad property and park where advised. Remember this is a working railroad!

 

 

 

RMD Excursion Reservation Refund Policy

On Cancellation, RMD will issue a full refund of excursion fees paid, provided there will be no adverse financial effect on the excursion and or RMD.
