June 25- 27 2010 - CO
Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad

Updated 6/18/10

Rocky Mountain Division ( RMD) will be hosting a three-day excursion on the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad out of Leadville Colorado commencing on June 25-27 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), 2010. Friday – Evening run: From Leadville roundhouse to Talus Slope and return. Round trip is approximately 20 miles long. We will cover over 20 miles up and back on the highest standard gage adhesion railroad in North America. The line was once part of the Denver, South Park and Pacific RR, a famous narrow gauge Colorado mountain rail line converted to standard gauge in WW II. This run originates at the historic RR roundhouse in Leadville traveling to “Talus Slope” and possibly beyond towards Fremont pass and the world famous Climax Molybdenum mine depending on the host railroad, track and weather conditions.
Our plans are to run late Friday afternoon ( weather permitting) with two runs Saturday: early morning and mid day . The activity will conclude with a mid morning run on Sunday before setoff. Total miles for the four runs will be in approx. 80 miles. Set-on, paperwork, and inspection will take place on Friday June 25th and Friday August 13th from approx. 3 pm to 5 pm, and again on Saturday morning from approx. 5:30 am to 6:30 am. NARCOA INSPECTION Form pre filled in will be appreciated. Cost: To be determined.
Check www.rockymountaindiv.com for updated details. There is a 25 car maximum for this excursion. Deadline for registration/payment: June 1, 2010 for the June run and July 15th for the August run. Run day late arrivals will be considered on a case by case basis ( depending on the number of confirmed cars present) but payment must be made in full with a good check made out to the RMD on the day of the run. The latest version of the NARCOA Rulebook will apply. NARCOA Insurance and Certificate of Examination card required and proof of same will be required.
Experienced and alert operators with motorcars in good mechanical condition are highly recommended. If you need to be mentored we must know in advance. Ensure that your motorcar and yourself are ready for high altitude operation (10,000 ft. up to 11,500 + ft. elevation) and that it will be able to pull an extended 11 mile grade with grades which may approach 4% . Spark arresters and wheel chocks required. THE ZERO BREAKDOWN RULE WILL APPLY! No smoking on railroad property and National forest smoking ban regulations will apply. Be prepared for a variety of mountain weather conditions ranging from sunny and 70 * F to snow and 30* F or colder. Bring lots of drinking water. Wear appropriate clothing, ( layering is one good choice ) NARCOA rules apply. Sturdy boots are recommended for this extreme railroad environment. There will be periods where we will be away from Leadville for a number of hours per train schedules so take whatever snacks, drinks and other needs you may have with you.
