Ferrocarrill TransAndean Railroad

Richard Reiff Photos

The Peru railroads were owned and operated by the government until about 6 years ago, when they sold off (e.g. privatized) to various operators. This line is part of the Ferrocarrill TransAndean Railroad, or former Southern Peru railroad operations. It has both standard gauge and narrow (3 foot) gage lines.
They followed the Railtrack (UK) business model and broke the railroad up
into two business....Track owner and train owners. So you have one
company that owns the track, another company that runs trains over the
track (any pays a toll). The trains are operated by Peru Rail, so they
pay TransAndean a fee for using the track. In turn, TA then uses that
money to keep the track up. Kind of like a private tollway.
