Black Hills Central
COMPLETED
The
Rocky Mountain Division and the Black Hills Central have teamed up again for
a 2 day excursion. The Black Hills Central, a tiny remnant of the extensive
railroading that went on there in South Dakota during some booming days.
4-4-0's paced themselves up the 4-6% grade of Tin Mill Hill out of Hill City
on the way to Oblivion. So operators, beware. How often can we do a 4-6%
grade on most motorcar excursion?
May 5-6, 2007. Seton: 5
May, early morning in the north yard crossing at the Hill City yard in Hill
City, South Dakota.
The Black Hills Central
is offering the motorcars exclusive use of the railroad for these two days.
The plan is now after the safety meeting, a trip to Keystone and a 45 min
layover at Keystone. Turn cars before we enter Keystone and back all the way
to the end of track. Head back to Hill City, where we will turn the cars on
the wye. Have lunch and then another trip back to Keystone for another short
break. Back to Hill City, a early dinner, then the evening round trip. This
is the best little railroad for a evening trip. Curves, hardwood and pine
forests and a twisty rural country road that we must cross several times.
This railroad demands safety at all crossing!
Sunday, May 6th, 2007.
0800, leave for Keystone and the day will mimic May 5th.
Cost: $40.00 per
motorcar
Meals and lodging are on
your own. Holiday Inn Express is right next to the railroad within walking
distance. And many restaurants as well. And there are many campsites around
Hill City.
The railroad have asked
that this not be a "NARCOA " excursion, but that NARCOA rules will be
adopted as our operations rules.
