August 18-21, 2011-CO
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (3 foot narrow gauge)
SOLD OUT
The Rocky Mountain Division of NARCOA invites you to participate in a 4 day
motorcar event on the D&SNGRR on August 18-21, 2011. Set on is Thursday
afternoon August 18th in Silverton. August 19th, 20th and 21st participants will
depart Silverton predawn, run to Rockwood and return, traveling approximately 56
round-trip miles per day against the current of traffic on this historic
railroad during "Railfest 2011", between Silverton and Rockwood for an excursion
total of about 168 miles. Setoff is planned for early afternoon on August 21st.
We will be meeting the historic steam power of the D&SNGRR as well other
visiting equipment as we travel the Animas Canyon and the spectacular
“High-Line”. This run will be immediately preceded by a run on the Cumbres &
Toltec Scenic Railroad to be held August 13-16 coordinated by Jim McKeel.
This is a demanding event on a busy railroad and we operate as a team. You must
be prepared to maintain the pace as set by the D&S pilot, obey all instructions
from the Pilot and the EC and meet all call times without exception. I
strongly encourage operators who have never run on this railroad to ride with an
experienced operator here before considering investing in a narrow gauge
motorcar. Experienced, alert operators and excellent motorcar mechanical condition please.
Read the special requirements section below. Most of this excursion we
will be operating on a “zero minute” breakdown rule. There will be no mentoring
on this event. This is a NARCOA insured excursion, and all NARCOA rules will
apply. This is a NO SMOKING event. All participants must be over 18 years of
age. No pets.
There is a 20 motorcar limit. Cut off date for signing up is Friday, July 15,
2011. This run usually sells out quickly, after which a waitlist will be kept.
Unless you have a ready to run car, in fairness to other participants, please do
not sign up for this run. (See the announcement for the June 10-12 D&SNG run if
you need a lower pressure run to try out a new car). In general, your “slot” is
not transferable, and do not expect refunds if you cannot attend (although if I
have someone on the waitlist, you can work through me to transfer the “slot”.)
To sign up,

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Excellent motorcar mechanical condition
please. AS OF JUNE 18, 2011, the D&SNGRR has requested no
highly modified/highly custom cars be used on the D&S. Changing
gauge does not constitute highly modified, but the frame, engine type and
capacity, transmission, drivetrain & braking system should be of types and
materials that would be used in actual motorcar production of a car of the
same size class. See
http://www.narcoa.org/docs/governance/custombuiltv1.6.pdf for definition of
highly modified or custom built cars that would fit under this restriction.
• Able to tow and be towed on zero notice. When a
car breaks down or cannot maintain pace, it must be put under tow immediately;
therefore your motorcar must be capable at being towed at the pace set by the
pilot without damage and without having to make modifications such as removing
the chain. Transmissions must have a neutral, and belts must be able to be
slipped. If your drive train cannot be slipped or put in neutral, it will
not be allowed to run.

possession
• NARCOA current Rulebook in your possession. All operators are required to have a
working knowledge of the current NARCOA rule book
• NARCOA compliant motorcar including (but not limited to), fire extinguisher,
lever actuated brake lights, headlights, lift handles, tow bar, safety chain,
etc.
• USFS Approved spark arrestor
• Front rail sweeps
• All motorcar wheels will be inspected and gauge checked, outside face of
wheels for 36" gauge, 42 7/16" + 0" - 1/8"
• Motorcars should be of the nostalgic traditional type
that are appropriate for what the narrow gauge railroads are trying
to achieve by having our group as guests on their properties. This means NO
steam cars, rail rods, track scoots, skateboards, modified ATV's or something
home made that wouldn't have been used in actual railroad service.
• All motorcars equipped with a turntable must have, (see rule 1 - 19),
(1) Hydraulic turntable - a positive locking device and audible warning device.
(2) Electrically operated turntable with positive gear engagement - an audible
warning device.
• As the owner/operator of a motorcar, you have the ultimate responsibility for
its safety and maintenance. Please pre-inspect your motorcar before you leave
home.
PERSONNEL RULES
• Experienced and alert operators please. NO MENTORING ON THIS RUN.
• Absolutely NO SMOKING in motorcars or on Railroad property.
• You must be over 18 years of age to attend this

shoes, sandals, etc.) while on railroad property and also when loading &
unloading or around your motorcar.

• Please refresh yourself and inform your passengers of all NARCOA personnel
rules.
• We will be in very remote territory at times; are you capable of walking out
if there is a problem and we are not able to ride our motorcars out?
OPERATIONAL REQUIRMENTS
• Be prepared to tow or be towed if there is a break down, make sure your
hitches and tow bars are compatible, may I suggest 1" holes in your hitch and
tow bars and 3/4" or 7/8" pins with keepers.
• THERE WILL BE NO INDEPENDENT OPERATION. This means if we are moving as a
group, you must keep up. Do not stop unless the car ahead of you is stopping, or
you have a breakdown. You cannot stop to take pictures. Taking pictures is a
passenger job.
• Radio communications: NARCOA CH1 151.625
• You may monitor the railroad’s frequency D&S 160.860
• All operators are required to have and understand a working knowledge of the
current NARCOA rule book. Note: It isn't the meet coordinators job to train
operators on rulebook items when they go on an excursion.
• ALWAYS EXPECT A TRAIN ON ANY TRACK AT ANY TIME IN ANY DIRECTION.
. Be considerate, stay alert and be prepared: For many reasons, some of which
are courtesy and others being safety and time restraints, please, operators and
passengers, stay with your motorcars and be considerate, stay alert and be
prepared. At times we will operate at a relaxed pace but when we need to
get out of the way and in the clear you must be a team player and
keep up with the group at the pace being set by the
railroad pilot.
Lodging: All lodging and meals are on your
own.
