Come join us for a
ride up and over the 3% grade of La Veta Pass. Built in 1877, the rails over
La Veta Pass were part of General Palmer’s Denver and Rio Grande RR route
into the San Luis Valley. The railroad used the slogan ”Scenic Line of the
World” to emphasize the fantastic scenery along the route. Wildlife such as
Bear, Deer, Elk and Mountain Lions may be sighted.
This line sees both
freight and passenger traffic today and is operated as the San Luis & Rio
Grande RR. The SL&RG has graciously consented to allow us to use their
tracks. [LJ]

Monday September 3, 2007 Creede Branch (formerly of the Denver
& Rio Grande RR)
Set-on at South Fork, CO, travel to Creede,
CO, a distance of 23 miles and return to South Fork the same day. Cost:
$125.00. NARCOA rules and
insurance will be in effect.
Ride the
historic rails laid by General Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs and
president of the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR. About 125 years ago,
thousands of miners, including such infamous notables as Soapy Smith, Bat
Masterson, and Bob Ford came from all over the USA to seek their fortunes in
Creede, Colorado. Now, we can follow their tracks along the beautiful Rio
Grande River and marvel at the 1883 depot at Wagon Wheel Gap. Not only will
you see this historic railroad of Southwest Colorado, but you will also feel
it as you go along the 22 mile standard gauge route. We may even spot some
deer, coyotes, and big horn sheep along the tracks. Join the RMD in a ride
through the Rocky Mountains that will provide lifelong memories! [DD]
