July 8th-10th, 2011
Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad
The Rocky Mountain Division is pleased to announce a 3 day excursion July
8th, 9th and 10th on the beautiful and friendly Leadville, Colorado and Southern
Railroad originating in Leadville Colorado. This run will traverse the majority
of the last existing 11 miles (approx.) of railroad on the route of the former
narrow gauge Denver, South Park and Pacific RR which dates from the 1880s. The
line was standard gauged in 1943. This is the highest standard gauge adhesion
railroad in North America starting at 10,000 feet of elevation in Leadville,
climbing to the proximity of the summit of Fremont Pass near the world famous
Climax Molybdenum mine at an elevation exceeding 11,000 ft above sea level.
The first of 3 planned runs will be an afternoon run on Friday July 8th.
Departure will be at approximately 12:00 pm after a mandatory safety meeting for
all participants before departure. The run will travel from Leadville yards to a
point near the world famous Climax Molybdenum mine. After turning the group will
then travel back to French Gulch water tank for a possible meet with the LC&S
Passenger train. The group will then follow the train back to Leadville yards
stopping at historical locations for photos and discussion. After returning to
Leadville yards, participants may set off or tie up for the night. Set-on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday as railroad schedules permit from 8:00 am to 11:30
am. Car inspections following NARCOA guidelines will be conducted during set-on
activities as well as releases signed by all participants. Details for the
Saturday run will be similar to Friday’s run. Sunday’s run will be similar but
possibly earlier in the day. We will be running a good portion of the time with
a scheduled passenger train. The “0 Breakdown rule” will be strictly enforced.
The run will be targeted for the first paid 30 NARCOA compliant cars. Overages
would be considered on a case by case basis. It is highly encouraged to register
early for this reason. Due to single track and other operating conditions,
Hy-railers and larger gang cars will be considered only on a case by case basis.
Call for clearance before registering one of these vehicles. Full payment is
required at the time of registration. Cost for this run will be $85.00 for a
single day or a special rate of $105 for all three days. This is a NARCOA
insured excursion and all rules and regulations for NARCOA apply. USFS approved
spark arresters are required. Wheel chocks are required.

Note the following: This is a very high altitude run. We will be operating from
an elevation of 10,000 ft above sea level to over 11,000 feet. Grades vary
between 0 and 2%. A typical car can lose in excess of 30 % of its sea level
horsepower rating at this altitude. Although the weather can be quite pleasant ,
changeable weather from summer highs of 75 * F to freezing winter weather
conditions can occur in short periods of time along our route. Hypothermia is a
very distinct possibility. Dress and plan accordingly. We will be on the
mountain for approximately 5 hours with no availability of food or drink.
Restroom facilities are limited to the “Great Outdoors” .
