June 17-20, 2011
Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad
The Rocky Mountain Division is pleased to announce a 4 day mini- excursion
and light work session June 17-20th on the beautiful and friendly Leadville,
Colorado and Southern Railroad originating in Leadville Colorado. This run will
traverse the majority of the last existing 11 miles (approx.) of railroad on the
route of the former narrow gauge Denver, South Park and Pacific RR which dates
from the 1880s. The line was standard gauged in 1943. This is the highest
standard gauge adhesion railroad in North America starting at 10,000 feet of
elevation in Leadville, climbing to the proximity of the summit of Fremont Pass
near the world famous Climax Molybdenum mine at an elevation exceeding 11,000 ft
above sea level.
Activity will vary thru the weekend but will commence with an evaluation run
Friday evening June 17th. Saturday, Sunday and Monday times and schedules will
vary to suit the needs evaluated on the evening of the 17th. We will be working
with railroad personnel to clear brush and clean crossings throughout those days
to make future MC runs more enjoyable and safer for all concerned. Other
activities are in the planning stages. Come along, this is a fun and different
slant on the normal excursion activities!
Note the following: This is a very high altitude run. We will be operating from
an elevation of 10,000 ft above sea level to over 11,000 feet. Grades vary
between 0 and 2%. A typical car can lose in excess of 30 % of its sea level
horsepower rating at this altitude. Although the weather can be quite pleasant,
changeable weather from summer highs of 75 * F to freezing winter weather
conditions can occur in short periods of time along our route. Dress and plan
accordingly. We will be on the mountain for varying amounts of time with no
availability of food or drink so plan accordingly. Restroom facilities are
limited to the “Great Outdoors”.
Full payment is required at the time of registration. Cost for the entire
weekend will be $20. This is a NARCOA insured excursion and all rules and
regulations for NARCOA apply. USFS approved spark arresters are required. Wheel
chocks are required. Bring any brush cutting tools that you have along with
shovels etc. We have a few tools but they are limited in number! Appropriate
work clothing is required. Hard hats and hard toed shoes are also recommended.
