The Rocky Mountain Division is pleased to announce the first portion of the RMD Fall Color tour on the beautiful and friendly Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad originating in Leadville Colorado. This run will traverse the majority of the last existing 11 miles (approx.) of railroad on the route of the former narrow gauge Denver, South Park and Pacific RR which dates from the 1880s. The line was standard gauged in 1943. This is the highest standard gauge adhesion railroad in North America starting at 10,000 feet of elevation in Leadville, climbing to the proximity of the summit of Fremont Pass near the world famous Climax Molybdenum mine at an elevation exceeding 11,000 ft above sea level.

There will be two runs over two days. You may run one or both days, but the cost is the same. Both runs will depart LC&S RR Roundhouse Yards at approximately 9 am after a mandatory safety meeting for all participants before departure. The run will travel from Leadville yards to a point near the Climax mine. (Weather and RR permitting) After turning the group will then travel to the Leadville yards. At this point on Wed. 21 Sept any who wishes may ride the afternoon passenger train. During the return portion of the trip, the RMD will conduct its annual meeting on the train. (Annual meeting will be announced at  later date)  After returning to Leadville yards, participants may set off or tie up for the night. A Bar B Cue is planned and paid members in good standing of the RMD as of July 26, 2011 will receive one free dinner per paid member . Additional dinner tickets are available for $15.00 per person.

Set-on Wed. 21 Sept as railroad schedules permit from 6:00 am to 8:30 am. Set on will be in the proximity of the LC&S RR roundhouse on the north side of Leadville. Car inspections following NARCOA guidelines will be conducted during set-on activities as well as releases signed by all participants. Please have a completed MC Pre inspection form to save time during the inspection process.

Thursday’s run ( 22 Sept) will be a repeat of Wed’s run with the exception that upon return to the Leadville yards at approx. 12 pm, we will set off to continue to the next leg of the RMD Fall Color tour in Alamosa or South Fork Colorado. Please see separate announcements on the RMD site pertaining to these choices.

Due to the need to quantify the number for the bar b cue the cutoff date for registration is August 31, 2011. Late entry participants will be considered on a case by case basis but it may not be possible to attend the bar b cue.

There are a number of motels/hotels in the Leadville area but reservations should be made early as this is a popular summer/fall tourist spot. Visit www.leadville.com for details. In addition Climax mine is engaged in startup activity and rooms may be difficult to find on a last minute basis.
Note the following: This is a very high altitude run. We will be operating from an elevation of 10,000 ft above sea level to over 11,000 feet. Grades vary between 0 and 2%. A typical car can lose in excess of 30 % of its sea level horsepower rating at this altitude. Although the weather can be quite pleasant, changeable weather from summer highs of 70 * F to freezing winter weather conditions can occur in short periods of time along our route. Hypothermia is a very distinct possibility. Dress and plan accordingly. There are no facilities on this run and bathrooms at the roundhouse are very limited.

Continue to monitor this site for any changes or additional details.
